A day in a life of an internal audit professional - an interview with Amy Jones

Amy Jones is a senior internal audit consultant in Protiviti's Chicago office. We asked her the following questions to get an idea of what her day to day responsibilities are as a internal audit professional. Below you will find her responses and advice if you are thinking about entering into this profession.

1. What was your college and your major?

I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana, and majored in accounting.

2. What courses did you find the most helpful to prepare you for your current position? What advice do you have for students about choosing a major and choosing courses?

The Accounting courses were most helpful to prepare me for my position at Protiviti.

3. What are your primary work activities on a day to day basis?

My primary activities change based on the project that I am on at the time, but for all projects I must track the completion status of the project and report to the project manager.

4. What industries have you worked in?

I have primarily worked in media & hospitality and financial services.

5. What do you enjoy most about your profession?

I enjoy meeting new people almost every day and learning something new on every project. My least favorite part is traveling to clients in the suburbs and getting stuck in traffic.

6. What advice would you give to students interested in the internal audit/risk consulting business? Anything you would do different or change? Any success strategies to share?

If you are interested in internal audit/risk consulting research the primary type of work that each consulting firm offers, because the projects can be very different at each consulting firm. I had a great experience working on many different types of clients and with multiple managers. This has helped me to understand how I want to focus my career.
