This report is based on interviews with 16 convicted offenders, focusing on people who have stolen large sums from organizations with which they are connected. The publication is written from the offenders’ perspective with the purpose to identify the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the individual’s behavior and assess the reasons why they were caught. This helps provide clues as to how future offences may be stopped or discovered, and assessing how they were caught may provide similar insights.
The interview questions address topics such as:
- How the crimes were perpetrated
- The methods they employed to commit the offence
- Why they chose to offend in the way they did
- The structure of the company – whether there was anything about the company that allowed it to become a target for fraud
- Their perception of themselves as part of this company
- Ultimately if there were any other factors which encouraged them to offend against their employer.
This survey was commissioned by Protiviti UK and conducted by Professor Martin Gill.
