The first part of this guide outlines internal audit skills

The second part of this guide is a self-assessment questionnaire
. It allows internal auditors to rate each of their skills on a scale of 1 to 10. The tool helps auditors understand where they should enhance their abilities through training, experience, etc.
The third part of this guide provides auditors with a template for setting short-term and long-term goals
. They can use it to formulate specific action steps to build their competencies and set target dates for resolution. This tool can be used effectively during the performance review process.
The skill sets within this competency model are examples, and will not be standard nor complete for all organizations. Each internal audit department should develop unique criteria based on their own circumstances and requirements.
