Horizon BCBSNJ, like any healthcare insurance provider, is subject to significant regulation at both the federal and state level. As a result, the business is "hard-coded" with a compliance orientation. "This is a great foundation for a strong system of internal controls," says Kathy Swain, vice president of internal audit.
Swain understands that while adoption of new technologies results in changes to a business risk profile, auditors also use technology to stay on top of these new risks. Finding the right talent to understand these technology risks is another challenge. “I’ve found it easier to recruit technologists and teach them to be auditors," Swain says, "as more organizations are built entirely on technology, internal audit will need to follow suit."
