Instant messaging (IM) has become another communication tool that extends a user’s options beyond using the telephone or electronic mail (email). Using existing internet protocols to send and receive text messages in real-time, IM client software is continuously exposed to the internet. It can be a potential vulnerability to company technology resources.

Under this policy, stringent rules on IM use at a company are required to minimize the risk of technology resources being disrupted or damaged by attack. This policy helps define the acceptable use of IM at a company and extends the policies outlined in the acceptable use policy.
